The Teaching Module “The interface between research and standardisation with a focus on blockchain” starts with definitions of research. Then, the dynamic interplay between research and standardisation is elaborated on. On the one hand, research informs the development of standards. On the other hand, established standards guide the direction of research. Both can enhance each other; research provides empirical data that shapes standards, while standardisation helps in the dissemination and application of research findings. In particular, integrating research insights into blockchain standardisation is essential for creating robust frameworks that ensure interoperability, security, and scalability within blockchain technologies. Identifying relevant standards that support blockchain research is crucial for fostering innovation and ensuring that research outputs are aligned with industry best practices

The Teaching Module “Role of Standards in ICT” provides a comprehensive overview of the different functions of standards for ICT particularly their importance in ensuring the interoperability, compatibility, and reliability of ICT systems. It also discusses the benefits and challenges associated with standards and emphasizes the need for collaboration between stakeholders to ensure that standards are developed and maintained in a way that benefits all parties involved. In a final section, we present different categories of blockchain standards and related examples. Here, we rely also on the standard landscape analysis performed within SEEBLOCKS.

The Teaching Module on the ICT standardisation landscape with a focus on blockchain will start with the basics of standardisation particularly elaborating on the standardisation process. In a second step, the most important standardisation organisations will be presented before the more comprehensive ICT standardisation landscape including consortia. Then, the linkages between the different standard setting organisatons will be shown. Finally, the most important international standardisation organisations including their technical committees focusing on blockchain
